General Motors (GM) announced that it will commercialize a new generation of lithium manganese-rich (LMR) prismatic batteries developed in partnership with LG Energy Solution by 2028.

The Detroit automaker is trying to lower its battery costs to enable cost parity with its gas-powered products by adding new types of cells and chemistries in those cells.

GM said that LMR battery cells use a higher proportion of the more affordable manganese and less of the more expensive nickel while delivering greater capacity and energy density.

GM says it has developed cells that will make batteries cheaper and more energy dense. The automaker aims to be the first to bring them to market.
