Lottery entrants must be Maine residents who will be at least 15 years old by the start of the 2026 season and otherwise eligible for an elver license. Each individual may submit up to five entries at $35 per application, with online entries incurring a $2 processing fee. Proceeds help fund eel management and enforcement efforts in the state.

The Department of Marine Resources will hold a lottery, starting at noon Jan. 26, for the right to apply for an elver license. The lottery will be available through 4:30 p.m. Feb. 20, providing lottery winners with the chance to apply for a license prior to the upcoming season, which starts at noon on March 22 and runs through noon on June 7.

Starting Monday, Mainers ages 15 and up can enter the state lottery to apply for an elver license. The Department of Marine Resources is awarding 20 new licenses to harvest and sell young American eels this year,
