Voting rights group says Parish Prison inmates, yet to be convicted of a felony, should be allowed to cast absentee ballots from the jail if they can’t vote in person for the first time.

Louisiana’s existing six congressional districts will be used for the 2026 midterm election after the U.S. Supreme Court did not rule in a case challenging their boundaries by the end of 2025.

A special primary election will be held May 16 for vacant state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education and state Supreme Court seats.

There are four open seats in the Louisiana House and one open seat in the Louisiana Senate after a handful of lawmakers resigned their posts this fall to pursue other jobs.

Louisiana Secretary of State Nancy Landry announced that six voting systems have been certified as the state moves forward with plans to acquire a new, fully auditable voting system.

The Louisiana State Bond Commission approved election applications for 12 parishes to decide on local funding measures. Voters in these parishes will consider property and sales tax propositions in May and June 2026. The commission also authorized millions in loans and bonds for various capital projects across the state.

Gov. Jeff Landry signed several bills into law during the regular 2025 session, as well as special sessions on insurance and 2026 elections.
