The U.S. Government is already using AI to benefit the public across its vast mission areas to include tackling global challenges such as climate change and cancer, and improving the quality and efficiency of government services.
The performance of AI systems shall be such that U.S. Government personnel can have trust and confidence in using AI systems, and the use of those systems should not undermine the public’s faith in U.S. national security institutions.

In 2022 alone, the U.S. federal government spent an estimated $3.3 billion on AI-related contracts, approximately 2.5 times more than in 2017.12 The reach of AI procurement is also large, with the federal government buying AI from hundreds of vendors.13
The United States federal government’s procurement of AI technologies has increased dramatically over the past few years.1 Based on research into the challenges that agencies face procuring cutting-edge AI, the NAIAC’s fall 2023 recommendations focused on what agencies can do within existing procurement authorities.
