That's a Weird Carabiner

We have always thought the Kong Frog was really clever. Press it up against a hanger or ring, and it snaps closed. To open, press the tabs on the side. We were pretty surprised when the carabiner we used to test it broke first, but we shouldn’t have been because it had already endured high forces in other tests. Frog MBS is 23 kN and the carabiner broke at 23 kN. We finally got the frog to break at over 24 kN. Clip into some great carabiners at https://hownot2.com/collections/carabiners | How NO

I clipped the WRONG strands in the Fusion Knot full episode I released last week. Don’t clip the lower strands or carabiner could get stuck in the knot, clip the higher shelf. This episode tests if it side loads it weird. What’s weird... is that it turned out to be super good enough. Full episode this relates to https://youtu.be/AaIzzBMU-pk Get a free knot with every rope you order at https://hownot2.com/ *some assembly required | How NOT 2

Were we concerned about the wrong thing? Instead of breaking at the back of the V thread, the 5mm Dyneema cord broke at the carabiner at 20.89kN. Very close to full strength of a loop. Your V threads may vary. Get your dyneema cord at https://hownot2.com/products/dyneema-cordelette | How NOT 2

Aid hooks connect to little edges and thin cracks, but you can’t connect a carabiner to them. We include a cord with most aid hooks we sell, but how strong is that cord when attached to the hook? Made for body weight placements, most aid hooks start to bend around 2-3 kN. We didn’t want to ruin our hooks, so we found a climbing hanger with a hole similar to the aid hooks we sell. The cord broke at 6 kN in both tests we conducted. https://hownot2.com/collections/hooks | How NOT 2

This permanent anchor had rust on it. Usually, ropes break at the knot or at the carabiners when in a loop like we tested this. However, this sample broke at the rust spot. 6 kN is technically sorta good enough to rappel on but you don’t know when it’s dangerous, so we advocate for permanent stainless anchors instead. “If 8mm chain is already twice as strong as the carabiner you are clipping to it, why would you go bigger? Here are three good reasons: ✨ It won’t wear out as fast from lowering or rappeling. This is great for high traffic areas! ✨ There is more room to clip carabiners ✨ The warm fuzzy feeling you get when seeing a gleaming chain after a runout pitch Our two samples broke at 56.9 kN and 51.6 kN. Stronger than the hanger, carabiners, and rope you are using to attach it to the wall and yourself. L

How strong are 3D printed carabiners? We tested PLA, ASA and TPU. PLA was the most reliable at about 100lbs. What would you use a 3D printed carabiner for? See our full episode at https://youtu.be/_6EhzJGCA_s or link in bio Get metal carabiners at https://hownot2.com/ | How NOT 2

If your carabiners look like these ones do, get new ones! From 8/30/24 til 9/2/24, get 25% off ALL CAMP PRODUCTS at hownot2.com These carabiners were left near the ocean for a few years. All of that salty ocean air caused their gates to fuse shut and crack right down the middle. How strong is a carabiner in this sort of condition? As you might expect, they were about as strong as the carabiner is rated to in the open gate configuration. In our first test, both carabiners broke at the same time!

Lappas’ Anchor 316L Steel Carabiner is rated for 48kN but the way we pulled it resulted in 40.70kN... super strong enough. The difference is probably our connectors and speed of pull. It’s one option of open systems at anchors so climbers can clip in. With rings or closed systems, they have to untie and retie, which is inconvenient and has also led to accidents. We recently got new tool leashes that @climbingtaiwan likes to use. We also got small, unrated accessory carabiners for use with the leashes that make a bold claim. 10 kN?! That can’t be right! Go figure, they broke lower than that. Yet another great reason not to use unrated gear for life supporting purposes. They are still plenty strong enough to catch a hammer or a drill. Thanks Ken K for sending in this carabiner and sharing it’s story with us. “In 1968 I was leading a pitch on the Benediktenwand in Bravaria, and while setting up the protection at the top of the pitch I had one of those “this is not going to end well” moments. The flake I was standing on gave way, but I did manage to get “rock” out before following up with “iieeeeeee’’ while falling about 5 meters. The belayer did a great job catching me, but it was still a fairly hard on the crotch and back. Af

Made by over 50 years ago, 3 of these carabiners got used and 3 sat in a closet. They were made by Seattle Mountaineering Cooperation. The carabiners that sat in a closet were labeled SMC, the carabiners that got used were white labeled for for Recreation Equipment Inc. Fun fact, SMC’s first product was an oval carabiner for REI. The carabiners we tested are the standard D model. Big thanks to Sam Johnson for doing research on these carabiners. Check out all the information he has compiled about

Ever seen a carabiner that was hollow? We had to put these on the Slacksnap to see the inside. Made by Salewa in late 70s West Germany these carabiners are rated in Kiloponds. 2000 KP = 2000 KGF = 19.61 kN. Slacksnap broke them at 19.49 kN and and 20.68 kN. At least 20 kN is included with every climbing carabiner you buy at https://hownot2.com/collections/carabiners | How NOT 2

@drr.rescue built a bfk with powercord that broke at 29.99kN. Then, he put a carabiner in the knot so it would be easier to untie and it broke at 29.84. It has no effect on the strength but it does make it easier to untie. Petzl warns about pulling on the gate side of a HMS carabiner. If you use it as a master point on your anchor and fill it up, how much force can you put on the gate side. We got 15.63kN testing a Petzl Williams carabiner which is rated for 27kN if used properly. It’s weaker, but super strong enough for most things. Just be careful when clustering up your anchor. We got a message from @ethan.iddings asking if there were any risks doubling an alpine draw on long slings with small carabiners. The HowNot2 crew thought it was an interesting question and put it to the test. The 22kN rated carabiner broke slightly low at 18.92 kN, and we couldn’t break the Blue Ice Alpine Runner on the UTM. https://hownot2.com/products/alpine-runner | How NOT 2

How big is the hole in a Petzl Sm’d carabiner? I can’t get a 3mm cord in it. 2.75 fit and breaks at 1.07kN and 2mm broke at 0.65kN. You can tie off anything you are worried about dropping but I think this device tether is better for when you have snow gloves on. I struggled to get even a 2mm cord in my micro traxion hole so you might need something even smaller if that is what you are tying off. Please DO NOT drill holes in your carabiners. Sm’D is forged that way. If you drill a hole, it could

A micro traxion is rated down to 6mm. Does it work on 3mm??? Not if it is a single strand but if you double wrap it, it breaks at full knot strength??? That’s crazy cool. How would you use 3mm now that you know double wrap works in a micro traxion? We have 3mm-8mm in 6 different kinds of tag lines... all by the foot. Plus teeth. Plus carabiners. Royal Robins is famous for his pioneering climbs in Yosemite and his clothing company. We just found out he imported climbing carabiners in the late 70s from Salewa in West Germany. Hollow carabiners are a really interesting dead end in climbing gear as innovations in forging allowed much lighter carabiners. 16 kN is weak by modern standards, but exceeded the rating printed on the carabiner.
