ON THIS DAY IN 1972 One of the GOATS of Boxing Muhammad Ali faced Alvin Lewis in Croke Park. Ali dropped Lewis with a right hand late in the fifth round. Lewis managed to get up at the count of nine, just as the bell rang to end the round. This was the only knockdown of the fight. Following the bout, Ali’s trainer Angelo Dundee voiced a complaint, arguing that Lewis had received a long count and was actually down for 22 seconds.
