Sound on for moth squeaks! I’m feeding the deaths head hawk moth honey mixed with water and I need to do this because I don’t think he understands that there is food in the dish, so he won’t unravel his proboscis on his own which is why I help him! In the wild these moths will feed by stealing honey from bee hives | Jumping spider & Moth life

We've been hearing about lots of sightings of the convolvulus hawk-moth this month. With a wingspan over 80mm they an impressive insect. This is a migrant species which appear in late summer and autumn. You can see them flying after dusk around tubular flowers, feeding with their long proboscis. Thanks to Liz Vandweller for sharing her sighting, the moth was attached by some Nicotiana Sylvestris flowers. | Sussex Wildlife Trust

The hummingbird hawkmoth’s proboscis moves independently, and a study shows that these movements are guided by the insect’s visual system. The hawkmoth could be an insect model for the study of neural strategies behind eye-appendage control. In PNAS: https://ow.ly/SgeT50QwwSm | PNAS

The Hummingbird Hawk-moth migrates to the UK from Southern Europe each year. It can be seen hovering over flowers, feeding with its long proboscis; its wings move so quickly that it 'hums'. Have you spotted one this spring? | Sussex Wildlife Trust

have you ever heard a moth squeak? ✨ death's-head hawkmoths are equipped with the ability to create sound! but how? 🤔 their proboscis(straw-like tongue) evolved to be very thick - enabling them to suck up their traditional wild diet of honey with ease. through this adaptation, they were able to intake more air into their throat and create a little chirping noise by vibrating it back out. 🖤 - #moths #sciencefacts #animallove #entomology #deathsheadmoth #insect | Stoned Affection

🦋 It’s not just hovering – it’s actually feeding! The striped hawk-moth has a remarkable, tongue-like structure called a proboscis. This long, flexible tube allows the moth to sip nectar while still in flight, hovering like a hawk - no need to land! Its proboscis can reach deep into tubular flowers that most other insects simply can’t access. As it feeds, the moth becomes dusted with pollen, which it carries to other flowers – making it an important pollinator for these specialised plants. This

Have you ever heard a moth squeak? Send this to a friend who hasn’t! The Death’s-head Hawk Moth (Acherontia atropos) makes its famous “squeak” by using a tiny internal structure in its pharynx, not its mouth or wings! Here’s how it works: •The moth forces air through its pharynx, a part of its proboscis (feeding tube). •Inside, there’s a special flap like valve that vibrates rapidly as the air passes through. •This vibration produces a short, high-pitched squeak, a kind of acoustic defense mecha

Rachael Tancock, The Nature Educator on Instagram: "They look and act similar to hummingbirds, which is why their common name incorporates these small, agile, nectar-drinking birds. Eurasian hummingbird hawk moths hover over flowers and use their long tongue, called a proboscis, to drink up nectar. The shared characteristics between hummingbirds and this moth are incredible and are a great example of convergent evolution. This concept describes species that look and act similarly but are not clo
