What a truly fabulous visit we had today with Ron and Kenneth from Oscar’s Place who came to Skydog to talk all things wild donkeys. We love and admire these guys for going above and beyond for the donkeys they rescue and to never stop learning more about donkey life. We are so excited that they are acquiring more land for more donkeys to live wild and it was an absolute joy and privilege to share all we know with such an amazing organization. There are so many donkeys in need and we love workin

My beloved first mustang and the reason behind Skydog - Buddy 🧡💛 He’s an incredible wild mustang who was my riding horse and took such good care of me and traversed every trail and hillside in Griffith Park. Trails with names like suicide trail, rattle snake, cliff top, rocky gulch, we rode them all. Buddy came through the prison program twice in Carson City and he was in the prison so long he was named Birdman (as in of Alcatraz) and renamed Birdie and I renamed him Buddy. He was green broke

A blustery fall morning as Phoenix’s herd walk across the landscape blending in with the pale hues of the sage and rabbit brush making them look even more ethereal. Phoenix and Ghost have a love story for the ages and they’re still hip to hip even with all the other mares who now follow his leadership. And within his band Hawk also has a group of mares and I made a mistake by calling Hawk, Lewis the grulla when it was Hawk the roan. It is hard for me to make out the horses because I’m usually a

After all the running wild horses lately it’s so lovely to get out and give scratches to some of the more tame mustangs at Skydog. Wilson was rescued from a kill pen and named for Scott @photoadvocacy to say thank you for all the incredible photos he’s taken of our horses and donated to sanctuary. He’s an extraordinary advocate and photographer and the wild ones are so lucky to have him in their corner. Wilson is truly the sweetest boy and I’m so happy we saved him. Then a quick look at his frie

And just like that Flash found his place and his peace. And just writing these words makes me tearful. Sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly but it’s all in their time as long as we get there in the end ❤️ When we started Skydog we focused on the physical and getting them back to good weight and health when we rescued horses. Spring valley boys coming home for winter 🧡🤎 So I thought you might like to see the process of bringing these wild boys closer to the ranch for winter, after they have spent spring and summer over the mountain grazing off the land. It’s a beautiful area made even better by the sight of wild horses on this massive pasture. Gris is an auction save who was spotted at Bowie auction and we brought him back to Skydog Malibu, before he carried on up to Oregon with Bo and Whiskey. Bo is the son of Mae

A bevy of babies born at Skydog brings us to the most asked question in comments. “Do you geld the stallions or let them breed?” All the stallions when rounded up by the BLM are gelded and we very rarely come across any Mustang stallions. There have been two - Raven and Bear who was rescued from a kill pen with Goldie and Aerial. He was gelded in quarantine before he travelled to us but his mares both had the first two babies at Skydog a few months later as they had already been exposed to him.

Commodore and Valor are in the building 🤎🤍🖤 It’s easy to say that these wild boys, whose adopters have made every concerted effort to gentle them and send them to the best trainers and work with them themselves, and when that doesn’t work Sanctuary is the best option for them. So they’re in the right spot to get back what they have been asking for all along, to stay wild and free, untouched and unhandled, untrained, and un-traumatized. I really appreciate the adopter who took Commodore becaus

Wow what a day ❤️ So I was positioned down the hill with the main herd and Firefly the mule was standing beside me. We were all looking up the hill at Priscilla and family and Priscilla’s friend Sedona started to walk to her. Suddenly Firefly took off to get closer to them and Dalton ran by as he spotted his mother. I couldn’t see a lot from where I was and then Janelle took over filming as she was closer. You see Dalton reach his mother Priscilla and she goes after him and knocks him back prote

On National Day of the horse I’m reminded every day is dedicated and devoted to horses here at Skydog. And here are some of the most beautiful ones in a family we all adore ♥️ Here is Wildflower who looks incredible these days, as she had the worst feet ever when we saved her from a kill pen, and she’s with Tupelo Honey and his mother Jorja. In the background again is a gorgeous looking Lady Grey and June. We are checking on our new girl June daily as she has lost a little weight and we most lik

I just had to post one more video of these two boys out on land and one of the very first things they did was roll ❤️💜 After all they have been through since being rounded up I truly believe they wanted to roll in Oregon dirt and brush and just christen themselves by bathing in the soil that surely smells like home. They are so accepting of their new gang and seemed to be looking around in awe and I’m not sure I ever realized just how beautiful they are. Valor seems to have doubled in size and

Well to say this was chaos would be accurate BUT beautiful, heart stopping, awe-inspiring chaos 🧡🤍 They all ran down to the river and the mares took a drink and cooled their feet while Flash and Midnight stood above on the hill taking it all in. Cruiser for the most part held back and observed and then Flash and Midnight came running down towards him. They did meet and tussle a little and I got super confused as I mistook Nugget for Flash !! BUT they definitely met and knew each other and Crui

We do love to focus on our babies on Sunday. We have no stallions at Skydog and all of them are gelded by the BLM when rounded up from the wild before adoption. Gelding older stallions is no small thing are there are tons of risks involved and some don’t survive. But we do have babies at Skydog born to mares we rescued who were already pregnant in the wild or who got pregnant in the slaughter pipeline as awful people breed them to make them weigh more for slaughter as they’re sold by the pound,
