There’s always a compromise with growing, often picking the lesser of evils. In an ideal world I’d growing winter salad through a weed membrane, this way it’s easy to control weeds which makes harvesting really easy!Enter the voles. These little critters live weed membrane, particularly in a tunnel where they are warm and sheltered from the weather and can scurry about safe from predators going from crop to crop with ease and getting fat and happy from our winter leaves. You might think allowing a

Some weeds, I take a little pride in, such as chick weed. Having this here makes me feel like a professional. Although it can be a sign of compaction, it is most often found in well airrated fertile soil, with relatively high nitrogen levels. A common sight in many organic growing systems. There was none at all when I got to this farm, but now, particularly in areas that are protected, or have had recent legume cover crops, I see lots of it. Hopefully it’s a sign that we’re caring for the soil c

Our friend the creeping thistle. Lack of rain, and some very resilient perennial weeds have knocked back my plans to use the flame weeder in advance of planting our Cucurbits. However, some of our recent drilled crops are ripe and ready for a flame weeder, as a pre-emergent…stay tuned to that in action… | Sunshine and Green

There are a few hidden costs to a poor yield, such as extra harvest time. Basically folks, spend the time getting on top of your weeds, it might not feel like it in the moment, but driving a hoe is a money making activity! | Sunshine and Green

The difference between being good and very good are just the tiny details. Focus your hoe on disturbing as much of the top centimetre, or two, of soil to expose the roots of the weed seedlings. Do this before the weeds have developed their true leaves as the they will be at their most vulnerable. Allow enough time before your crops next need watering for the weeds to die. A sunny day with a good breeze will help! | Sunshine and Green

I used to put weed membrane down and grow winter salad through them. It’s so much easier to control the weeds that way which make picking REALLY EASY!Trouble was, a couple of years ago I lost ALL my chard and maybe a third of my salad to the hungry mouths of several families of voles. It’s great from them, they nest under the membrane, and used our crops as their larder. Lovely. So now, I have to contend with weeds…but at least we plenty of salad! | Sunshine and Green

Making the most of a rainy day. Weed control this time of year is less urgent, but also requires a little more attention. Without the heat of the summer sun simply disturbing the roots of the weeds won’t sop them, you really need to slow down and make sure the roots are properly exposed. | Sunshine and Green

If I’m honest, I’m so relieved that no one mentioned it in the comments, I almost went somewhere else to film that previous reel. There so many other jobs happen and weed growth is so slow this time of year, it easy to lose track and before you know it there’s a serious problem.Anyway, this weekend is going to be for sorting these weeds out. | Sunshine and Green

There’s a little window, from mid August through to September when it’s safe (ish) to remove our crop protection to allow in natural predators to help fight of pests, such as white fly, that may be hiding under the nets. It is also an opportunity to tidy up, knocking back weeds, perhaps removing side leaves from the sprouts (for airflow), so we can establish an undersown cover crop of cereal rye, vetch, cornflower and phacelia. This will help protect the soil under the sprouts as we harvest them

Mechanical weed control on heavy soils like these are a challenge in on seasons. However, in summer you have the sun as an ally, so long as it doesn’t rain for a couple of days after you’ve used your hoe to disturb the roots of the weeds, you should find that weed disappears.Winter, although weed control is rare this time of year, we still have small amounts of work to do in the polytunnels, such as here in the garlic. Only now, we haven’t seen the sun in days, temperatures and evaporation are l

When collecting manure from horses, or farm yards: Have you sprayed you pastures in the last 12 months? Do you make your own hay? If yes, when were your hay meadows last treated/sprayed for weeds? (In the last two years…avoid!) If yes, contact the person who made the hay, and ask the above question. If they buy hay from a hay merchant, or at auction, avoid as there’s no traceability at all…that’s how I got caught! No one should sell hay that was treated with Clopyralid. No one should give you ma

At no point have I said I know what I doing, but I have a lot of ideas and i like to try things. Up until now, I’ve not really had to the tools to try this out properly, nor the time. The most important thing, and challenging, part of this is timing, having enough time to prepare the ground and for the weeds to germinate and for the soil temperatures to be just right and the weather to give us a window and for the weeds to be at the right stage to burn off but not grow back…a lot could go wrong

Plants can give us clues as to whether or not we are doing a good job of looking after our soil. Because, not matter how hard we try, as soon as we start trying to improve soil to grow crops, we open the door to damage it.Paying close attention to how certain crops behave, water deposits and even the type of weeds that are growing we can gain an insight in to what it is that we might be doing wrong, or what we are doing right. Both move us forward to a healthier soil. | Sunshine and Green

The dawn, salt, and vinegar solution to kill weeds is all I use. Get this vinegar, not the store bought kind. This is 4 hours later. We did have sunshine and that really helps. Voles and moles won't like the smell either.
