Crinoids Fossils

This is one of the most beautiful fossils you will EVER see. This is a spectacular crinoid colony. A Jurassic giant measuring over 100 square metres. It took 18 years to clean and prepare! Crinoids are often nicknamed sea lilies, but they are a type of echinoderm, related to sea urchins and starfish. This beauty comes from Holzmaden, Germany, and is on display at the excellent Hauff Museum. It was one of the 50 fossils featured in my book, LOCKED IN TIME. It was a pleasure examining this fabulou

These fossil crinoids look like something straight out of The Matrix 👀 Their curling arms and intricate structure are strikingly similar to the Sentinels from the first film — nature’s own sci-fi design, millions of years before Hollywood imagined it. 🌀💀 #Crinoids #Fossils #MatrixVibes #PaleoArt #NaturalHistory #SciFiMeetsScience #GreenRiverFormation #InStoneFossils | In Stone Fossils

Crinoids, also known as a 'feather star' are rarely seen swimming - Crinoids are a group of Echinoderms, and so related to sea stars, sea urchins, sand dollars, and sea cucumbers. They like to hang out on coral or sponges and grab plankton in the water column as they float or swim by. If the area they are in isn't doing it for them anymore, they take off! #MarineBiology #SeaLife #Animals #Nature | Wild About Nature

Crinoid Feeding
0:27
When crinoid squat lobsters are feasting, they typically extend their specialized feeding appendages to catch food particles. These appendages, called setae, are equipped with fine hairs that trap tiny organisms and organic matter from the water column or surrounding environment. Black crinoids, also known as feather stars or sea lilies, possess several unique abilities. They can move by crawling, using their arms to pull themselves across the ocean floor. Some black crinoid species can also swim short distances by coordinating their arm movements. Additionally, many crinoid species, including black crinoids, have the remarkable ability to regenerate lost arms if they are amputated. While not all crinoids are proficient swimmers, some species, including black crinoids, ha

Feather stars are actually crinoids — relatives of sea stars and sea urchins. • They use their feathery arms to catch tiny plankton drifting in the current. • Unlike most starfish, feather stars can swim by rhythmically waving their arms. • Many species hide during the day and climb up high at night to feed. • Some species, like the Tropical Feather Star, come in bright yellow, black, orange, or even multi-colored patterns. • If threatened, they can drop an arm — and regrow it later. • Fossils s

Crinoids that are attached to the sea bottom by a stalk are commonly known as sea lilies, while the stalkless forms are called feather stars. #ThatsWild: Feather stars, aka free-swimming stemless crinoids, look a little like facehuggers from the Alien movie. They’re actually related to starfish and sea cucumbers. Scientists recently reported the discovery of new feather stars, including the Antarctic strawberry feather star, aptly named for the fruit-like body shape beneath their 20 arms, which they flail rhythmically to swim.
