The Avalon Regal Theater opened in 1927, designed by John Eberson in an ornate Moorish style and once seated more than 2,000 people. It became a landmark of South Side culture before closing in the early 2000s after decades of use as both a theater and church. The building was purchased in 2014 by Jerald Gary for just $100,000, with plans to restore it as a performing arts and community center.
