Views from within a Michigan bog! In order to explore Pennfield Bog, MNA staff had to first navigate what some botanists call a 'Decodon zone' before reaching a squishy mat of peat. This challenging transitional area is between an open water moat bordering the bog and the peat mat in the middle and is dominated by floating mats of emergent shrubs like swamp loostrife (aka the Decodon).
