For nearly a decade, Penn Arts & Sciences glaciologist Leigh Stearns and collaborators have been using a laser scanning system to study Greenland’s Helheim Glacier. Their research has shown that the glacier's large calving events, when massive chunks of ice break off, do not behave as scientists previously believed.
