In Victorian-era people rarely smiled in photographs due to long, uncomfortable exposure times (often a couple minutes), the influence of serious painted portrait traditions, and cultural norms that equated smiling with madness, lower-class behavior, or drunkenness. Also it exposed the bad teeth ( as that days good dental care wasn’t invented yet) . Photos were treated as serious, expensive, and rare documents, not casual snapshots.
