Baby Squirrel Crying Out For Mom These three baby squirrels were born inside an exhaust vent for a stove. The mother squirrel packed the vent full of newspaper pieces, twigs, grass for their nest. As we were removing the nest and babies from the vent, the mother squirrel took that as an opportunity to come running out of the vent. When a mother squirrel carries her baby, it’s usually to move them to a safer location or a new nest. She gently picks the baby up by the scruff of the neck or back using her mouth—a natural instinct that keeps the little one safe and secure during the journey. Fiercely protective, she’ll make as many trips as needed to relocate all her babies. This careful, loving behavior is a beautiful example of a squirrel’s strong maternal instincts.
